Omega 3 Fatty Acids Found To Encourage Muscle Growth

A joint study from Washington University and the University of Nottingham in the UK suggests that muscle growth can be significantly encouraged by Omega 3 fatty acids from fish oil. Omega 3 has long been known to have anti-inflammatory properties. This recent study suggests that they also can have a positive impact on the metabolism of muscle proteins.

Their findings are based on an 8 week study of muscle growth in men and women subjects who supplemented their diets with 4 grams of fish oil daily. Protein turnover was measured in bodies in a fasting state as well as those with a controlled addition of amino acids as well as insulin. The study discovered that muscle tissue has a positive anabolic response to amino acids and insulin when Omega 3 fatty acids were introduced into the diet. Also, from the conclusion of the study summary: “Omega-3 fatty acids stimulate muscle protein synthesis in older adults and may be useful for the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia.”
